Pirogov Nikolai Ivanovich - Famous Russian surgeon, teacher and naturalist, the founder of the Topographic Atlas of Anatomy. In search of new effective methods of teaching Pirogov uses anatomical studies on frozen corpses, he called it icy anatomy. In this way, a new discipline was born - topographic anatomy. A couple of years later, Pirogov published the Anatomy Atlas, which he called Topographic Anatomy, illustrated by incisions made through the frozen human body in three directions, this book became indispensable for surgeons. The Atlas and the Pirogov technique as a whole allowed to operate causing minimal injuries to the patient, which significantly influenced the development of surgical operations. The book Sevastopol Notes by Pirogov was published thanks to the trip of Nikolai Ivanovich in 1854 (the beginning of the Crimean War) to the theater of operations. There, from St. Petersburg, Pirogov left with a group of doctors and nurses. He was appointed chief surgeon of the besieged Anglo-French troops of the city of Sevastopol. After Pirogov’s death, his second wife, Baroness Von Bistrom, decided to perpetuate the memory for posterity and published this book of personal observations and reflections of the author in the form of letters written during the 349th day of the siege of Sevastopol.
