Demakov. 1878. 135 p. Hard. binding. slightly enlarged. format. Karl Augustovich Schmidt (1819-1887) - Before coming to Russia, he worked in several German schools as a teacher of gymnastics. The reasons for his immigration to our country are unknown, perhaps he was hired at the invitation of any influential persons for the development of physical education in educational institutions, since already in the first quarter of the XIX century there was a tendency to include physical education in the system of secondary and higher education in Russia, which was never fully implemented in practice. Schmidt received the rank of collegiate assessor, was engaged in teaching, became an inspector of gymnastics at the St. Petersburg Council of Children's Shelters and an honorary member of the Demidov House of the Care of Workers. In 1867 he was invited as a teacher of gymnastics at the Pavlovsk Military School, where he worked until his death and served as an outdoor adviser. On behalf of the government bodies K.A. Schmidt has prepared a number of specialized "Gymnastics Manuals" for gymnasiums, educational institutions of the Spiritual Department, orphanages and folk schools, military and junior schools.
