the first stamps of the UNR 11 pieces with overprint Trident on the imperial royal stamp.1918. collection in monetary order. The overprint of the trident on postage stamps had several key reasons due to the historical circumstances of 1918: Political Legitimation and Sovereignty: After the proclamation of the independence of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UPR) and the approval of the trident by the state emblem, the young state was to demonstrate its sovereignty. Postage stamps are one of the main attributes of statehood. In the conditions of war and the collapse of the former empire, the UPR did not have the opportunity to quickly develop, engraved and mass-print its own postage stamps in the required amount. At the same time, huge reserves of old stamps of the Russian Empire remained in the postal warehouses. Practicality and speed: Applying a mechanical stamp (overprint) on top of existing stamps was the fastest and cheapest way to start the work of national mail, without stopping the circulation of correspondence. Interestingly, due to technical difficulties and lack of centralization, overprints were made by local postal districts (Kiev, Podolsk, Katerynoslav, Kharkiv, Odessa, etc.) That is why the forms of tridents on such stamps differ significantly, which makes them a unique object for collectors (philatelists).
