Jaeger, we meant to fill a very significant gap in our translated literature: we already have several multi-volume works on Universal History, borrowed from the abundant stock of European historical science, but so far there has not been a single one that is quite suitable to the needs of most Russian readers. Such a book can and should serve as the Universal History of O. Jaeger - a work remarkable not only for its scientific merits, but also for its extreme simplicity and accessibility of presentation. An important advantage of this book is that its author, who is perfectly familiar with all the most important works on universal history, as an old and experienced teacher, is able to outline in historical study the path that must be followed by every person who has a claim to a general education. Pointing out and facilitating this path, the venerable historian eliminates all unnecessary and petty, focusing the reader's attention only on the important and essential, and thus makes it possible to easily and conveniently review the epochs of the historical life of peoples in the form of a series of beautiful, lively and faithful paintings, sketched with a calm and firm hand. Weighing the facts with a strict criticism of extensive knowledge, O. Jaeger chooses little from them, but what he gives is easy to keep in mind and remains in the mind of the reader in the form of clear, positive and integral representations. In all respects, the excellent work of the German scientist is complemented by a very important, artistic side, which acquaints the reader with everyday details, with the history of art and, in part, even with the degree of culture that a country enjoyed during a certain period. Fully aware of the importance of this artistic side of the work. Jaeger, we took full advantage of it, and even supplemented it with the introduction of a significant stock of drawings on Russian History, in the form of engravings in the text and individual applications, the plots of which are borrowed from Russian archeology, Russian historical life and reality. On top of all this, we decided to give O. Jaeger’s General History the cartographic material in which, of course, every serious reader should feel a very significant need. In view of this need, we add O. to the Russian edition. Jaeger a number of maps, drawings and plans, which are not in the German original, firmly believing that these additions, which required a lot of labor and material costs, will be appreciated by Russian readers, the favorable attention of which we at this moment offer in full the first volume of General History.
