The tragedy of Goethe in 1902. Translated by Peter Weinberg With his notes and with the latest illustrations. Edition of the New Journal of Foreign Literature. Printing house Suvorin St. Petersburg in 1902. The collection state. It was long ago that I conceived and began to carry out the idea of translating the prose book Faust, and I remember, among other things, Goethe’s remark about the advantage of prose translations of poetic works over poetic ones. This remark cannot be applied to any poetic work (except, it can be, only Dante's Divine Comedy) to such an extent as Faust. Regardless of its purely poetic dignity, the immortal tragedy is, as it were, the richest encyclopedia of the deepest thoughts, philosophical truths, products of the work of the all-embracing mind. Only the great creative power of Goethe could put all this in verse, and even more rhymed, to give what is often an abstract philosophical treatise, a poetic form that expresses thought clearly, accurately and definitely with each word of its epithet, circulation and gives it proper knowledge. To convey all these subtleties in a poetic translation could only be such a poet as Goethe, and not to convey them all without exception, or to express what the author said at least in part "in his own words" means to give about this great creation a completely inaccurate concept and, delivering even a good poetic translation of aesthetic pleasure, introduces, however, only half of the original. This was convinced by me and all the Russian poetic translations of Faust (and there are not many of them), of which, from my above-explained point of view, none can be considered quite satisfactory, even those who (for example, Kholodkovsky, Strugovshchikov, kn.Tsertelov), have poetic merits, most of them convey the true thought, mood, but very often, even too often resorting to the details of their existence. Translation of "Faust" prose is also very difficult, sometimes at a standstill putting the work, because for the sake of the strictest fidelity of the original, i.e. for the sake of the main task of work, it is sometimes necessary to sacrifice poetry, if it is not possible to combine both. But no matter how accurate the translation of Faust is, reading it, as well as the original itself, for various reasons, is impossible in Mongolian places without a note and explanation. They will be given at the end. Antique Gift Edition Faust in prose
