Bellum Jugurthinum is a famous historical work by the ancient Roman historian Gaius Sallustius Crispus (86-35 BC), describing the war of Rome with the Numidian king Jugurt in 111-105 BC. Contents of the book In this work, Sallustius considers: Causes and course of the war between Rome and Numidia. Corruption and moral decline of Roman politicians. The cunning and political skill of Yugurti, who for a long time successfully avoided defeat. The victory of Rome thanks to the reforms of the generals Gaius Maria and Lucius Cornelia Sully. The main idea of the work is to condemn the corruption and greed of the Roman nobility, who sold state interests for bribes from Yugurti. Sallustius also emphasizes the importance of military discipline and honest government. The publication was prepared by Dr. Eustachy Makarushko, a professor at the University of Lviv. This textbook was used in Ukrainian educational institutions during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, when Ukrainian gymnasiums focused on the study of Latin and ancient history.
