Antique book The Life of Jesus Christ 1893. Composition by Farrar. Publishing house Lopukhina in 2 parts. The book is in a publishing calico binding with artistic gold embossing. The composition of F. V. Farrar, Doctor of Theology, member of the Royal Society, Archdeacon and Canon of the Westminster and Ordinary Chaplain of the Queen of England. The living sympathy and favorable reception with which the new translation of the present book of the life of Jesus Christ was met, quite prove that in our society there is a demand for serious theological books that can satisfy the deepest needs of the religious and moral spirit. The first edition of the Life of Jesus Christ in our translation diverged with a rare rapidity in our theological literature, so that a few months later a new edition was needed, which appeared in the form of a second luxuriously illustrated edition. But this last edition, by its very nature, could not be public, and its external magnificence, together with the inevitable significance of the price, could in many only arouse a fruitless feeling of regret about the impossibility of acquiring it by its own means, and it is in that environment of insufficient persons, which makes up the vast majority of theologically developed and generally fond of serious readers. It was this consideration, prompted by a truly stated need, that prompted the publisher to offer the reading public a real public gift antique edition. When editing it, it did not seem necessary to resort to any special works and techniques, since such luxurious gift editions have long existed both in England and in all those countries where this book had spread, and therefore we could only conform to the same edition of the original, made under the editorship of the author himself. A significant difference between it and the library is that the national edition offers only one text of the book, with the omission of the entire scientific apparatus, that is, those numerous scholarly applications and notes that, significantly increasing the volume and price of the book, at the same time, are available only to a limited number of readers who are able to scientifically and critically monitor the very course of the author's work, and therefore are not of vital interest to the public. But naturally, such a mechanical cutting off of scientific applications from the book could not be limited, and therefore, in the interests of the text itself, it was necessary to make some changes and additions. In this respect, we have already worked independently of the national edition of the original, trying to adapt the book to the spirit and interest of Russian readers. To this end, once again revising the text, we have made many of those notes and annexes that are of common interest and contribute both to the understanding of certain reported facts and to the addition of the text itself. At the same time, it was possible, without prejudice to the book, but in the interest of Orthodox theology, to smooth out in part those roughnesses in thought and expression that are inevitable in any translated book. In general, the present edition of Farrar The life of Jesus Christ fully reproduces the entire text and preserves intact all the advantages and brilliant qualities that brought this book worldwide fame and made it a reference book for Christians in both hemispheres of the globe. In this edition, the famous work of F. V. Farrar first appears in our country in the luxurious form in which it has long been in circulation both in England and in other countries. Its fascinating pages are equipped with many magnificent illustrations that even more vividly and more clearly draw for the reader both those areas and pictures of nature, among which the Savior of mankind lived, taught, suffered, died and rose, as well as archaeological monuments preserved to us from the ancient world. Engravings, which are pictures from ancient images, coins and other antiquities, are provided with special explanations. Pictures of the areas of Palestine are made by a photographer-artist specially seconded for this purpose. The Russian edition of the life of Jesus Christ accurately reproduces the illustrated edition of the English original - not only in drawings, but also in format, paper and even binding, the stamp for which was deliberately ordered in Leipzig. In short, the publisher took all measures to make this edition luxurious, in the full sense of the word. It is not inferior to English and in its external elegance, has nothing like it in our spiritual literature. The text has been thoroughly revised, corrected and provided with a map of Palestine. In the same form, for the first time, there is a Russian translation of Farrar’s second work: The Life and Work of the Holy Apostle Paul, and the author’s third work: The First Days of Christianity, which exhausts the historical and exegetical exposition of the Holy Book of the New Testament.
